About Viagra

What Is Viagra?

Viagra (sildenafil citrate) is a prescription medication belonging to the phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitor class of drugs. Zyvex Pharma Viagra is formulated as film-coated rounded-diamond-shaped tablets available in 50 mg strengths.

A critical point to understand is that sildenafil at recommended doses has no effect in the absence of sexual stimulation. Sexual stimulation is required for response to therapy. Viagra does not cause an erection spontaneously it simply enhances the natural erectile response when sexual arousal occurs.

Viagra Uses

Erectile Dysfunction (ED)

Zyvex Pharma Viagra is indicated for the treatment of erectile dysfunction in adult men the inability to achieve or maintain a penile erection sufficient for satisfactory sexual performance. Experts recommend a selective PDE5 inhibitor as first-line therapy for ED unless contraindicated.

Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension (PAH)

Sildenafil also has FDA approval for the treatment of World Health Organization (WHO) Group I pulmonary hypertension (pulmonary arterial hypertension) in adults to improve exercise tolerance and delay clinical worsening. When used for PAH, sildenafil is marketed under the brand name Revatio and is typically taken three times daily at a 20 mg dose.

Off-Label Uses

Sildenafil is occasionally used off-label for secondary Raynaud phenomenon, female sexual arousal disorder, and altitude-induced hypoxemia as adjunctive therapy.

How to Maximize Zyvex Pharma Viagra Efficiency

Timing and Dosage:

For most patients, the recommended dose is 50 mg taken as needed approximately one hour before sexual activity. However, Viagra may be taken anywhere from 30 minutes to 4 hours before sexual activity. The effects last approximately four hours, though the response is most pronounced around the 1-2 hour mark. Based on effectiveness and toleration, the dose may be increased to a maximum of 100 mg or decreased to 25 mg. The maximum recommended dosing frequency is once per day.

Food and Alcohol Considerations:

Administration with a high-fat meal may delay the onset of action compared to the fasted state. It is generally advised to wait at least two hours after eating before taking Viagra to avoid delays in absorption. Excessive alcohol consumption can also impair erectile function and reduce the effectiveness of the medication.

Lifestyle Factors:

Supporting the medication with diet and lifestyle changes can complement Viagra by improving cGMP levels. Regular exercise improves blood flow, while managing stress and maintaining good communication with your partner can enhance overall sexual health. Getting more exercise and maintaining a healthy body weight can significantly improve response to therapy.

Important Considerations:

  • Viagra works best when taken at least 30 to 60 minutesbefore sexual activity
  • Do not take more than one dose in 24 hours
  • Sexual stimulation is requiredfor the medication to work
  • High-fat foods can slow absorption consider taking Viagra on an empty stomach
  • Avoid taking Viagra and then waiting anxiously; performance anxiety can work against the medication

Side Effects

Common Side Effects (occurring in ≥ 2% of users):

The most common adverse reactions include headache, flushing, dyspepsia (indigestion), abnormal vision, nasal congestion, back pain, myalgia (muscle pain), nausea, dizziness, and rash.

Cardiovascular Effects:

Single oral doses of sildenafil (100 mg) administered to healthy volunteers produced decreases in sitting blood pressure, with mean maximum decreases in systolic/diastolic blood pressure of 8.3/5.3 mmHg. The decrease in sitting blood pressure was most notable approximately 1-2 hours after dosing. Decreased blood pressure, syncope (fainting), and prolonged erection may occur at higher sildenafil exposures.

Serious Side Effects Requiring Immediate Medical Attention:

  • Priapism:An erection that persists for more than 4 hours requires emergency medical treatment. Sildenafil should be used with caution in patients predisposed to priapism, including those with sickle-cell anemia.
  • Sudden Vision Loss:Patients should stop sildenafil and seek medical care if a sudden loss of vision occurs in one or both eyes, which could be a sign of non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION). Patients with a history of NAION or a "crowded" optic disc may be at increased risk.
  • Sudden Hearing Loss:Patients should stop sildenafil and seek prompt medical attention in the event of sudden decrease or loss of hearing. Some people may also experience tinnitus (ringing in the ears) or dizziness.
  • Allergic Reactions:Signs may include migraine, loss of consciousness or seizures, and severe allergic reactions.

Who Shouldn't Use It

Absolute Contraindications:

Viagra is absolutely contraindicated (must not be used) in the following situations:

  1. Patients using organic nitrates or nitric oxide donors:Co-administration with nitrates in any form (such as nitroglycerin, isosorbide mononitrate, isosorbide dinitrate, or amyl nitrite) is strictly forbidden. Sildenafil potentiates the hypotensive effects of nitrates, which can cause a dangerous and potentially life-threatening drop in blood pressure.
  2. Patients using guanylate cyclase (GC) stimulators:Co-administration with riociguat or other GC stimulators is contraindicated.
  3. Known hypersensitivity:Patients with a known allergy to sildenafil or any component of the tablet should not use Viagra.

Patients Who Should Use Caution or Avoid Use:

  • Cardiovascular patients:Viagra should generally not be used in men for whom sexual activity is inadvisable because of their underlying cardiovascular status. Caution is advised in patients with a recent (within 6 months) myocardial infarction, stroke, or life-threatening arrhythmia; in patients with resting hypotension (BP <90/50 mm Hg) or hypertension (BP >170/110 mm Hg); or in patients with cardiac failure or coronary artery disease causing unstable angina.
  • Patients with severe renal impairment:Since sildenafil clearance is reduced in patients with severe renal impairment (creatinine clearance <30 mL/min), a 25 mg dose should be considered.
  • Patients with hepatic impairment:Since sildenafil clearance is reduced in patients with hepatic impairment (e.g., cirrhosis), a 25 mg dose should be considered.
  • Elderly patients (≥65 years):While no dose adjustments are strictly required, elderly patients are more likely to have age-related liver, kidney, or heart problems, which may require caution.
  • Patients taking alpha-blockers or antihypertensives:Concomitant use may lead to hypotension. Patients should be stabilized on alpha-blocker therapy prior to initiating sildenafil treatment, and initiation at a 25 mg dose should be considered.
  • Patients taking strong CYP3A4 inhibitors:In patients taking strong CYP inhibitors such as ritonavir, sildenafil exposure is increased, and a decrease in sildenafil dosage is recommended. For patients taking ritonavir, co-administration with sildenafil is not advised. For other CYP3A4 inhibitors (e.g., itraconazole, ketoconazole, erythromycin), a starting dose of 25 mg should be considered.
  • Patients with a history of NAION:Sildenafil should be used with caution, and only when the anticipated benefits outweigh the risks, in patients with a history of NAION in one eye, as there is a potential increased risk of NAION in the second eye.
  • Children and adolescents:Viagra is not indicated for individuals below 18 years of age.
